Vows

Vows are made every day. Casual vows are a way for us to resolve to do something, like exercise more or be more forgiving. We make vows, but we also break vows. Wedding vows are the ones we take most seriously and ones we try our hardest not to break.

BREEZE

Christmas Eve

“Is this really necessary?” I asked squeezing his arm as I blindly climbed the stairs. “I’m gonna fall.”

“Yes, it’s necessary. Just one more step.” I heard the door open and he removed the blindfold. “Ta da.”

“Oh wow,” I said, clutching my chest. “This is. I can’t believe you did all this.”

“With everything going on, we never got around to decorating.”

Shame had not only put up a tree in the corner, he had draped icicle lights every six inches or so across the entire ceiling and done the same down all of the walls. The entire living room twinkled. It felt magical.

“You’re so good to me,” I said, hugging him tight around the waist. “This is, this is everything.”

“There’s more.” He smiled as he pulled out a small ring box. I covered my mouth when he opened it to reveal two platinum bands inside. “We’re gonna do this right someday, Dimples. But for now, this is all I got.”

I giggled, giddy with excitement, as he removed the rings from the box and handed me the larger one. He then tossed the box to the side and held the smaller ring up.

When he dropped to one knee, my eyes watered.

“So, will you fucking marry me or what?” he asked.

I laughed and nodded my head frantically. “Yes! Yes! Yes!”

“Let’s do it then.” Shame stood, his smile faded to a more serious expression. “I, Seamus O’Rilley, take you, Breeze Cleary, to be my wife.” He held the ring out again, and I finally caught on that he meant get married right then and there. It couldn’t have been more of a Shame thing to do, or more perfect. He winked and continued. “With this ring, I promise to love and protect you forever. I promise to wake up every day and be a better man for you, and I vow no matter how hard times get, I will always be by your side.”

He slid the ring on my finger. My face hurt from smiling. My eyes watered, which I welcomed because they were happy tears for once. I then held up the ring in my hand. My heart burst with so much happiness that I started sobbing as I tried to recite something back to him.

“I, Breeze Cleary, take you, Seamus O’Rilley, to be my husband.” I sucked in a ragged breath, swiped tears and composed myself enough to finish. “With this ring, I promise to love and protect you forever. I promise to wake up
